Polio Update

Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota provided an update on the status of polio around the world.  Polio continues to be a threat to all until it is eradicated 100%. Under-vaccinated communities and international travel connections keep the U.S. vulnerable to imported cases.

There are two types of polio: wild polio and variant polio. The wild poliovirus remains in only two counties with interruption achievable in Pakistan but off track in Afghanistan.  Variant outbreaks are driven by a small number of high-transmission areas, where focused vaccination can reduce spread.  Variant polio is mostly in Africa and Asia.

Most polio cases go unnoticed.  70% of infected people have no symptoms.  24% of infected people only have symptoms of a minor illness, like low fever and sore throat.  There is no treatment for polio, only prevention through vaccination.
