The first STRIVE group outing of the 2026-27 school year was a joy for students and mentors alike. Rainy weather meant a need to pivot from the plan to volunteer at the Community Garden to an indoor program at the Lakeshore Resource Network.

Ludington Area Schools Superintendent Travis Walker led the team in engaging activities to pump them up for the school year. They played Rock, Paper, Scissors, Rockstar, which was won by our own Kathy Bromley. The tweak to the traditional Rock, Paper, Scissors game turned all who lost their bouts into cheerleaders for those who won. Next, he had each person write what makes for positive relationships in Sharpie on balloons and then toss around the airy bags of balloons. They then wrote what contributes to negative relationships on water balloons and learned how difficult it is to keep the balloons afloat with negativity. Surround yourself with positivity, he encouraged.

Ludington Food Club Director of Food Access Alison Glossinger gave a tour of the food club and led service projects, from prepping for the start of this year's Lakeshore Food 4 Kids program, counting out menu items, and repalletizing items headed to the club's Food Hub in Hart.

The 16 students, 16 mentors and STRIVE leaders, Dan Sleeman, Frank Marietta and Patti Klevorn, got to know one another better as they spent time enjoying their Hungry Howie's pizza and salad and telling the group what they've learned about each other so far. From shared birthdays to shared pet loves, to shared career interests, the matches are serendipitous!

This year's mentors are: Jen Hinderer, Kathy Bromley, Mike "Bucko" Bourke, Mary Lou Ohnsman, Kelly Parker, Nathan Sheldon, Roger Wills, Shelby Soberalski, Mary Bruno, Lynnette Nichols, Kari Johnson, Amanda St. Hilaire, Laura Ward, Michael Leikert, Alison Glossinger, and Meleah Mariani.

Next up, we'll gather for pumpkin carving just prior to Halloween.
